Nudes and bathers are subjects I like to draw on. Through these works, what I am representing is also my relationship with my own body. I like to give these figures a central place, and a setting as unexpected as a landscape.

My memories are like a supple, fluid material; they carry me through time from one canvas to the next. Here it is 2022: I was picking up chestnuts at the side of the road just before storm Ciarán. I don't think we ever felt as connected to nature as we did then. I was filled with gratitude. Doing something so simple at that critical moment gave the chestnuts an everlasting taste.

I often come back to that stretch of my adolescence, the summer holidays, the garden of the house. These paintings are a way of getting in touch with the person I was, and of questioning her.

A friend who had come round for a coffee, cup in hand, the garden behind her. It is the companion piece to Mirrors and windows, house: my parents' house and the people who walked in unannounced. Blessing the house may be no more than looking at the people you love while they are not watching themselves.

I stayed at my parents' house for a few months before taking a flat of my own again. During that time I became interested in the life of the house, and above all in the people who dropped in for a coffee unannounced. Family and friends posed without knowing it in front of the bay window onto the garden.

Marie Michelle Le Millier (born in 1984 in Mahébourg, Mauritius) is a French painter. She lives and works in Brittany. Her painting, most often oil on paper, is drawn to the ordinary gestures of the shoreline and the seasons: foraging, fishing on foot at low tide, picnics and meals eaten outdoors, rendered in scenes where colour stands in for memory. She holds a research master's degree in visual arts from the Centre Saint-Charles (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, 2019) and worked within the Opaz 3 studios in Aubervilliers from 2019 to 2022. Her work has been published in Sub(ti)tle Magazine (2023) and shown at Galerie Cécile Dufay in Paris (2024).
