Against an ochre sky, a creature with cat’s ears reaches one hand towards a square of blue night and the lemon moon, and holds in the other a cobalt thread drawn taut to a black bird perched on a red fruit. Three nights set in windows, a drawn sun, minute fir trees, a stag: the thread ties the worlds together as it would in a tale. The more airborne of the two canvases, and the larger.

Two horned figures, dressed in red and covered in grey scales, hold up at arm’s length a city of domes and spires drawn in ink, which melts into pink and green runs of paint. Above them, two tilted windows, one blue, one garnet, the lemon moon, and a cobalt border along which the black birds of the series file past. Architecture as dreamed, somewhere between a memory of Tunis and a palace out of a tale.

A bird alights on architectural shapes in plain gold, in the middle of a watery sky: blue, yellow and pink washes, fish drawn in white along the margins, a frieze of pebbles. All of it is painted, in acrylic and watercolour, after cut-paper studies made in a notebook, and the city floats as in a dream.

Sonia Ben Slimane Besada (born in 1996 in Tunis) is a Tunisian-Spanish visual artist based in Copenhagen. Trained at the Atelier de Sèvres, the École nationale supérieure d'art de Limoges and then the Københavns Kunstskole, she works in painting, ceramics and sculpture. Her compositions draw on tales, poetry and the oldest of images, from the cave paintings of Altamira and Charama to the hangings of East Asia. Out of them comes a bestiary of bulls, foxes, flying fish and lemon moons, somewhere between magical realism and childhood memory. Her work has been shown in Tunis in the exhibition Musk & Amber (2025) and at Archivart Gallery with "Cette part de vestiges en moi…" (2026).
