Two bird-headed figures share a room with a window onto the mountains, on the left a pale nude, one hand raised to her chest, on the right a tall dark figure with the head and neck of a swan and a light oval mark on its breast. The collage of digital drawing and cyanotype on paper holds them in the same blue, the pale one almost absorbed by the window behind her, the dark one standing against the wall like a guard. They belong to Those Who Keep Vigil Between Worlds, Boubaker's 2025 series of small watchers, in which each frame holds a threshold and those who stand on either side of it.

The head and neck of a swan turn back on themselves against a pale ground scattered with spots of light, the bill pointing left, the neck filled with the texture of water and closed at its base by a white pleated ruff. The ruff is the one worn by the figure of Honor and Infamy, handed here to a bird, and the collage of digital drawing and cyanotype on paper brings that costume down to the size of a keepsake. The piece belongs to Those Who Keep Vigil Between Worlds, the series of small watchers Boubaker made in 2025.

On a small vertical piece of frayed cloth, a single peak fills the centre, with two pale shapes set into its flank like the posts of a doorway, a stand of firs at its foot, the branches of a pine at the top and clouds drifting between the summits. A long fringe hangs from the left edge and a loose thread crosses the top in a slack loop, like the handle of something meant to be carried. The piece belongs to the fringed textiles Boubaker exposed in daylight under the title Where the silence stays, where the mountain keeps the shape of a building that is no longer there.

On a small rectangle of frayed cloth with a long fringe on its right edge, mountain ridges rise in layers of blue and grey above dark shrubs, and on one slope a row of columns runs down the rock like water, neither quite a temple nor quite a trickle. Printed in daylight, the cyanotype keeps the marks of its own liquid, and the ruin dissolves into the landscape that holds it. The title, shared by the other fringed pieces of the series, gives the image its place, a valley where something once stood and where only the silence has stayed.

A narrow band of cloth nearly two metres long runs from the wall down to the floor, with a night sky crossed by falling streaks at the top, then a stack of sea strips, each frayed at its lower edge and laid over the next, and below, on a darker blue, a temple fragment, a standing figure with the head of a bird and a last colonnade lying on the ground. Read downwards, the piece goes through its layers the way one goes down into memory, and the figure standing between the water and the stones keeps the threshold.

Dustfall

A long panel of cloth, turned a deep blue by daylight, is crossed at mid-height by a strip of ruins left in white, colonnades and broken walls along a single horizon, while pale flakes fall over the whole surface above and below it. Two lighter, mottled lengths of fabric hang in folds on either side and give the panel the bearing of a draped figure. The title names what the image records, a slow fall of dust over what remains of a city, printed by the same daylight as the stones it covers.

Procella lenis

A length of antique linen, hung loose like a sheet, carries a row of temple ruins reserved in white above a band of sea, with a fringed square of water laid over the centre and a red silk thread, embroidered by hand, following the outline of the ruins. Pale patches of foam or cloud drift across the top and the bottom of the cloth, which was exposed in daylight. Procella lenis is Latin for a gentle storm, and the whole piece stays in that weather, where the ruins are neither rebuilt nor swept away.

How To Leave The World

How does one leave a world that keeps writing itself on the body? Boubaker holds the question open: a figure caught between presence and dissolution, painted in the flat, saturated fields of colour that define her practice. The title takes up an inscription that recurs across her canvases, 'Comment sortir du monde', less a slogan than a fragment lifted from the real.

What remains when the individual story dissolves? In Boubaker's iconography the skull is never a classical vanitas: it is what persists once the name has gone, a vestige rather than a symbol, rendered with the economy of gesture that carries her seated, fragmented figures, caught in flat fields of deep blue and vivid orange.

Three figures sit before a range of blue mountains, two with the head of the black swan, one in a ruff and a green coat, hands joined. Nothing happens, and that is the drama: a tribunal, a family portrait or a waiting room, held in the flat colour and drawn contour of Boubaker's practice. The black swan, her recurring messenger of the unforeseeable, here takes a seat.

Honor

A dignitary in a ruff and a striped coat, arms folded, with a skull for a face: the pose of official portraiture, emptied of its sitter. Honor is the first half of a pair with Infamy, same figure, same stance, the ground turned from turquoise to orange. Boubaker paints what remains of authority once the name has gone, in the flat colour and drawn contour that carry her hybrid figures.

The companion to Honor: the same ruffed figure, arms crossed, but the ground has gone orange and the skull leans, as if listening. Two words for one posture, and the title alone decides which side of the story the portrait falls on. Boubaker's skull is never a classical vanitas; it is the face left to a figure once reputation has done its work.

A deep dive into patriarchy

Facing her, a figure with an animal's muzzle stands wrapped in pink and blue drapery, and a grey form pushes in from the right edge, half arm and half smoke, ending in a beak. Lemons and a few orange flowers hold the lower edge. Boubaker's most direct canvas, where the scene does the work the title announces, and the swan is the one who has to sit through it.
